Glen Spencer

I qualified at Coach Part 1 level in 1997, and went on to attain Coach Part 2 in 2005. I ‘upgraded’ to Level 2 on the new coaching structure in 2006. Finally, I became qualified to run the Badminton Junior helper Award in 2009.

Shortly after attaining a coaching qualification in 1997 I help set up the South Birmingham Junior badminton Club, based at Colmers leisure centre in Rubery, Birmingham.  This remains as popular as ever today and continues to achieve its primary objectives of ‘improving badminton skills within a fun environment’, realising the ambitions of children. Hundreds of children have passed through the club in that time, and some have progressed to Worcs or Warwicks counties, the West Midlands Performance Centre and also Colmers adult club.

I am currently a part-time coach, slotting this around running a successful weather consultancy business, as well as a busy family life looking after my four active children.

I have coached a full range of ages and abilities, from complete beginner to county junior, as well as adults.  I currently coach in local schools and universities, as well as for WMPC as and when required. I have always been involved in the promotion and development of badminton and our clubs, liaising with a range of institutions to help increase participation. I have been successful in achieving several lottery grant awards for SBJB, as well as helping to maintain its Clubmark status. My BJHA award has allowed me to inspire children in the benefits of coaching badminton.

I have attended numerous courses and workshops, and maintain up-to date qualifications including SPC, CRB and first aid.
